Top 3 Fun Games For Kids to Lose Weight!

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Suppose that you’ve never worked out in life, and all of a sudden someone tells you that if you wish to get rid of your fat belly you, you have to hit the gym for two weeks straight and spend an average of six hours there per day! How would you react to that? Your first thought would be that it is better to keep your fat belly intact and watch that cool Hollywood movie instead of working so hard.

Well, that is the exactly the same way your kids think when they are asked to workout like crazy for the purpose of weight loss! However, if you ask them to do some fun activities which would keep them cheerful and help them lose weight at the same time, then nothing like it! In this article I will share three such fun activities for your kids!

1. Dog walking: Walking is one of the simplest ways to lose weight, but kids won’t want to walk without any incentive. Do you have a pet dog at home? If yes, the incentive could be that of taking the dog for a walk. If your kids are particularly attached to the pets at home, this would become easier! Be an example to your kids and take the dog with you when going out for your regular morning walks, and your kids would soon follow suit!

2. The twister trick: Board games and video games definitely make your kids fat, but not all games are that bad. Consider for example the twister game! Would you call it dull and boring? Definitely not! It is one game which kids of all ages are sure to enjoy, and since they cannot play it sitting on the couch, it would help them lose weight as well!

Again you could take the initiative by playing the game for your kids at first, and since kids like to emulate adults, they would soon follow you!

3. Let the chair be filled with music: Okay, I mean musical chairs! This is a very well known game but very few people know that it could be used to make your kids lose the fat belly in an instant! The game is pretty simple: just get several hula hoops and chairs and put them all close to each other. Let the music begin!

The kids are supposed to walk in a big circle around the hoops or chairs as soon as the music begins. Immediately after music stops, the kids must jump fast into the hula hoops or the chairs; if anyone is unable to jump on the chair in time, he is sent back to the cheering section. Before the start of the next round of the game, you should take away one chair from the group!

Seasonal Affective Disorder

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Seasonal affective disorder is also known as winter depression. It is called as such because it only occurs during cold days or usually during winter. A person with this disorder has normal mental health for the whole year except during winter or cold days. There are cases wherein people experience extreme changes in mood when seasons are changing.

A person with seasonal affective disorder often feels restless and unable to do activities of daily living. Depression and lethargy are also common. At times, elevation of mood and feelings of aggression may also happen. All of these manifestations occur yearly. Whats more odd is that it occurs specifically at a certain period. In addition to the symptoms, people with seasonal affective disorder may also experience feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and loneliness. Social withdrawal may also be present. People with seasonal affective disorder have tendencies of becoming overweight due to overeating. Experts have linked the disorder to light exposure which is why it happens during change of season.

Even though the exact mechanism remains unknown, experts have seen a connection of the disease with genetics, gender, and even the chemicals that are present in the body. Based from observations, patients with seasonal affective disorder have a dysfunctional circadian rhythm. The sleep-wake cycle of a person is called the circadian rhythm. The dysfunctional circadian rhythm causes the manifestations of oversleeping in these people. Melatonin, a sleep related hormone, is also dysfunctional. During cold seasons, the body normally produces more melatonin. The high levels of melatonin in a person cause manifestations of depression.

In addition to melatonin and circadian rhythm, serotonin levels in patients with seasonal affective disorder are also erratic as well. Typically, a patient with seasonal affective disorder has low levels of serotonin. Serotonin is a very important neurotransmitter that activates multiple nerve cell function. The modulation of anger, appetite, and even sleep is all controlled by serotonin. Metabolism and body temperature is also controlled by serotonin. If there is a slight change in the levels of serotonin, all of these functions will definitely be affected.

Feeling sad is normal especially if it is caused by circumstances. However, if sadness is prolonged and the person can no longer do normal activities due to extreme sadness, then it is already a big problem and the person should consider consulting a health care professional. Patients diagnosed with seasonal affective disorder are also observed for possibilities of bipolar disorders and major depressive disorders.

For patients with seasonal affective disorder, various treatments are widely available. The most common method to treat this disorder is through light therapy. A specialized lamp is used to expose the person to intensive light for thirty minutes to one hour. Usually, the person will be at a distance to the lamp and be exposed to the light. This method is often used because of the disorders association with light exposure.

Aside from light therapy, patients with seasonal affective disorder are also treated with hormones. Melatonin supplements are provided in order to regulate the levels of melatonin. As for serotonin, increasing its levels is necessary, that’s why drugs called Serum Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or SSRIs are prescribed to patients with seasonal affective disorder.

For relatives and significant others of patients who are experiencing seasonal affective disorder, it would be best to provide support. These patients need a lot of emotional support from their loved ones while they are experiencing symptoms associated with the disorder.

How To Eliminate Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

A lot of people wonder if they have gastroesopheageal reflux disease. In general, gastroesophageal reflux disease is also known as acid reflux disease. This condition is defined as the long term damage in the mucosa of a person due to the abnormal reflux present in the esophagus. The most common symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease are heartburn and regurgitation. People often think that their heartburn is associated with major heart disease, hence consulting their physician about it.

Episodes of vomiting and swallowing problems are common to people with gastroesophageal reflux disease. Vomiting usually occurs after eating wherein the foods that have just been eaten will regurgitate, making the person vomit. Because vomiting will include some acidic contents from the stomach, this will contribute to the damage to the mucus layers that line the esophagus. When a person is vomiting frequently, a condition called hypochlorhydria is likely to happen. This condition is defined as low hydrochloric acid levels in the stomach. This condition occurs because the hydrochloric acid is lost when the person vomits.

During the day, symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease are more likely to happen. This is because a person is standing or is in an upright position all the time. Normally, gravity will pull down everything which includes the foods that we eat. In people with gastroesophageal reflux disease, food will go back and forth in the stomach, causing acid reflux. The acid reflux is responsible for the manifestations of symptoms such as heartburn due to the damage in the esophageal linings. However, one way of neutralizing the environment of the esophagus is to swallow saliva because it contains bicarbonate.

A common symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease is heartburn. The symptom is called as such because there is a burning sensation felt near the heart. However, this symptom is not associated with the heart itself. The location of the burning sensation is either at the back of the breastbone, on the abdomen, or on the chest. Although heartburn is a very common finding, there are some who report a dry cough or having difficulties when swallowing.

The real cause of gastroesophageal reflux disease is still not rooted out but experts have found out that it may be related to some factors. They have also found out some commonalities among patients with this disease. These patients often have a relaxed lower esophageal sphincter. Normally, this sphincter should be contracted so that food will not go back from the stomach to the esophagus. Conditions such as hiatal hernia can also predispose a person to gastroesophageal reflux disease. Some factors also include smoking, obesity and pregnancy.

Once you are diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease, a physician will inform you about the foods that you should avoid. These foods often cause worsening of the symptoms due to their contents. The foods to be avoided include drinks that have caffeine, citrus fruits, chocolate, alcoholic beverages, spices such as onion and garlic, spicy foods, mint flavored foods, and tomato based products.

In order to avoid suffering severe symptoms, it would be best to make necessary lifestyle changes. Changing your bad lifestyle habits would even help you to achieve a better state of well-being. Such changes include avoiding prohibited foods and cessation of smoking habits. It would also be better if meals are small but frequent.

Obese individuals who are diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease should have a diet regimen in order to lose weight. Loose fitting clothes are also advised to wear rather than tight fitting clothes. To treat symptoms related to acidity, over the counter antacids are advised. After two weeks of intake of these antacids and the symptoms have not yet subsided, a consultation to the physician would be necessary.

Are You Harming Your Kids By Making Them Obese?

Monday, April 13th, 2009

It is said that America tops the obese adult population in the world, which is of course true. However, one seems to overlook the fact that America is also home to the highest population of obese children. If WHO (World Health Organization) is to be believed, our world contains more than twenty million obese kids, most of whom are in the age group of five-eight.

WHO also says that childhood obesity has reached the level of an epidemic in America, so much so that in the past 30 years the number of obese American kids has more than tripled! Isn’t your child one of them too? It is time to take control of your kid’s life and help him lead the kind of comfortable and healthy life we would want him to lead! And this is only possible by helping him get rid of the extra pounds!

In fact, if America tops the number of obese kids, even third world countries are not far behind. You would think that an economically backward continent like Africa would have skinny kids because most of their parents are too poor to feed them properly, let alone overfeed them! However, very often our beliefs don’t coincide with reality. Just recently a special task force sent to Africa to estimate the health stats of the people living there encountered more obese kids than malnourished children!

You may be thinking: why all this hullabaloo about childhood obesity? What is wrong if the belly of your kid if a tad flabbier than his peers? The answer is: just like overweight adults, fat kids are also likely to suffer from harmful diseases such as high blood pressure, type 1 diabetes, hypertension, fatigue, heart diseases, and in some cases, even early death!

In reality, the root cause of childhood obesity has little to do with genetics and more with poor lifestyle habits. Often people add two and two and jump to the conclusion that the kid is fat because of his parents. But that is not true at all! Kids emulate the unhealthy habits of their parents and naturally become fat like them! If you and your kids follow healthy lifestyle habits, both of you would be able to get rid of fat very quickly!

Truth to be told, the onus of the rising levels of childhood obesity lies on parents to a great extent. We parents prefer our kids to have junk foods since they can be simply procured from outside and help save the time we would have spent on cooking! A diet rich in fat and sugar could only make your child fatter and fatter! There is really nothing new to be said about it. Unless you are willing to spend a little time and energy in cooking healthy foods at home, don’t expect your kids to become any slimmer!

Apart from making them eat healthy foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, it is also important that you try to limit their intake of soda and fizzy drinks!

Controlling the food habits of your kids is only half the battle won, the other half being that of encouraging them to become more active! If you are concerned about your child’s future and wish to offer him a healthy life, you would need to take him away from Xbox and PSPs to outdoor sports such as cricket, basketball, tennis, etc! Encouraging them to indulge in cardiovascular activities such as swimming, dancing, rope jumping, etc., would also help them burn fat and lose weight!

3 Surefire Ways to Keep Your Kids Away from Weight Gain!

Monday, April 13th, 2009

There is really nothing surprising about the fact that America is host to the highest number of obese kids! If you ever visit a decent American fast food restaurant, you would find out almost an equal number of kids and adults eating out there! In fact people there not only eat fast foods outside but bring them at home to eat during lunch or dinner time! In short, fast food seems to have become almost an huge part of American diet!

Eating once in a while at a fast food restaurant is one thing, but making it a habit and considering junk foods to be part of your staple diet is going to make you and your kid fat and nothing more! These foods have an attractive outer appearance and also taste great in mouth, but once they go inside the body, they get deposited as fat and make the person overweight! Thankfully there are certain simple and easy ways to get rid of this menace. Read on to find out about these ways!

It would of course be wrong on your part to put the entire blame of adopting unhealthy eating habits on kids. After all, don’t children pick up habits only from their parents? They have enough knowledge to notice what their parents are doing, but are not intelligent enough to differentiate between good and bad eating habits!

As a parent, it is your duty to guide your kid during his childhood. Many parents, some purely out of laziness and others because of lack of time, ask their children to have their fill at a local fast food restaurant! Why? It is easy and effortless, since parents don’t need to spend time on cooking! The concept may look attractive on the surface but the ending is obviously not so good!

Now the question-why should you worry about your kids’ health! Kids should remain fit and healthy not just for cosmetic reasons and social acceptance but to keep themselves away from harmful diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, etc., which go side by side with obesity! If you don’t want your kid to suffer from these terrible maladies and die an early death, your best bet is to start implementing the following three measures right now!

1. Breakfast is important: Starting the day with a healthy breakfast is as much important for you as your kids. Very often, adults skip breakfast citing ‘lack of time’ or ‘important business appointments’ as excuses. Children too follow them, their excuses being either ‘lots of homework’ or ‘getting delayed for school’. However if you or your kid skip breakfast, it won’t be weird for either of you to gorge on a couple of burgers later in the day when you would no longer be able to put up with hunger!

Eating breakfast regularly is as much important as having a healthy breakfast. White breads, sodas, burgers, French fries, etc. are NOT what you should include in your kids’ breakfast! Kids should have a breakfast rich in protein which can be found in plenty in chicken, eggs, etc. Salads are also a good breakfast food! Apart from that, any homemade meal cooked using low-calorie oil would make for an ideal breakfast food!

2. Make the food attractive: Unlike adults, kids won’t eat anything which doesn’t taste or look good. They may not be like to eat something as dull as vegetables, but top it with cheese, and they would lick the plate dry! Same goes for pasta. Instead of serving them plain pasta, try serving it in “shapely” form!

To give you an idea, how about a triangular or octopus-shaped pasta! The more visually attractive the food is, the more attracted they would be to it! Slowly they would get so accustomed to healthy meals that their addiction to junk foods would wear off!

3. Let them eat small: The principle of eating in small portions applies as much to kids as adults. It is no use forcing your child to eat a bucketful of rice when he doesn’t need it! Instead, you should serve him the same rice in three or four smaller servings!

Kids are habitual grazers, which mean that they would take longer to eat than an adult! This is a good habit, so don’t discourage it! Let them enjoy every bite of the food they eat, as they are likely to become satiated quicker this way than otherwise! As a result, there is much less of a chance of them ever overeating!

An Absolutely Fantastic Trick to Keep Your Kids Slim!

Monday, April 13th, 2009

We all know that the only method to keep our kids from getting any fatter is by making them eat healthy fruits and vegetables as well as forcing them to stay away from junk foods. However, any parent knows that it is easier said than done! After all, which kid would want to give up on the tasty junk foods for the sake of fruits and vegetables! Well, good news is that there is a little trick which works wonders in this case! In this article I will talk about that little-known but useful trick!

The trick is that of hiding healthy foods in the guise of ‘comfort’ foods. How about a spinach burger, or a ’soft drink’ made up of just plain water with a tad of sugar and a pint of natural lemon or mango flavor? How about substituting butter with margarine for the purpose of cooking those delicious and yummy popcorn balls? There are plenty of ingenious ways you can use to make your kids eat healthy foods without much fuss!

Now, there are certain things to keep in mind here:

1. First of all, contrary to what many parents believe, there is nothing unethical about tricking your kids into eating healthy foods; the only ‘bad’ thing which is going to happen as a result of this trick is that your child would be more and more addicted to healthy foods and his addiction towards junk foods would automatically diminish over time!

Most of the organic fruits and vegetables out there are high in fiber, among other nutrients! Therefore these foods help keep your kids full for a long time, and consequently, their appetite for junk foods is killed!

2. Secondly, while it is true that this method only works for young children, it is also true that if you make them accustomed to healthy foods right from their infancy, it would be easier for them to incorporate healthy eating habits later in life, and when that happens, you won’t really need to trick them anymore by offering healthy foods camouflaged as junk foods! Remember that habits, good or bad, are adopted by human beings right from a very young age!

3. Thirdly, in the quest of making our children eat healthy foods, we must not lose sight of the foods they may be allergic too! Milk may be good for the growth of kids, but many kids are lactose intolerant and as such, cannot digest milk properly! The only way is to offer skimmed or ‘fat-free’ milk instead!

Also there are many kids who are allergic even to the innocuous potatoes! If your kid dislikes potatoes no matter how you cook them, then there is more to it than its bland taste. However if your kid seems to prefer potato chips in place of roasted or steamed potatoes, then it is just an unhealthy food choice which needs to be taken care of. Granted that potatoes are high on carbs, but still, steamed potatoes are lower on calorie content than potato chips; plus your kids need carbs anyway!

How Does Isolated Systolic High Blood Pressure Affect Health?

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Blood pressure concerns are completely understandable. I suffered from high blood pressure myself and now spend my time researching this problem as well as many other health conditions.

140 over 90 is usually considered high blood pressure. A person measuring from 120 over 80 to 139 over 89 is generally considered to fall into a pre hypertensive category. The top number is called the systolic pressure.

Why do these numbers matter? With age, tends to come high blood pressure. It is estimated that at least two thirds of people age 65 and over live with high blood pressure. Some believe the age range may actually start at closer to 50.

Left untreated, high blood pressure strains the heart which can eventually lead to stroke or heart attack.

Kidney disease and even blindness can occur as a result of chronic hypertension.

Isolated systolic high blood pressure typically describes a situation in which the systolic reading is measuring high where the diastolic may not be. The systolic reading measures the force of blood thorugh the arteries while the heart beats.

While both the systolic and diastolic readings are necessary for hypertension to be diagnosed, the diastolic tends to go down as people age. Therefore, the systolic reading is especially important.

To confirm whether or not you fall into the high blood pressure arena, you should have it checked (and probably re-checked by your doctor.)

Feeling badly is not always an indicator of high blood pressure. The name “silent killer” is attributed to hypertension as many people do not even know they have been suffering from the disease until a heart attack or stroke occurs.

The possibility of medication being prescribed does deter some people from having their blood pressure professionally checked. Actually, it is the side effects of the medication that can be a deterent. This is important to discuss with your physician.

Voicing this apprehension may not mean the doctor will necessarily change his or her opinion of prescribing medication. This is a major complaint when is comes to many Western physicians.

A number of doctors do not trust that improvements to ones lifestyle will take place (rightfully so in many cases) so medication becomes the “safe” answer to keep blood pressure under control.

My all natural High Blood Pressure Program has been tremendously successful in treating and curing high blood pressure (be is Isolated Systolic or otherwise high.) It is very relaxing and requires a small fraction of your time.

4 Simple Ways to Help Kids Maintain a Fat-Free Lifestyle!

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

We all want our kids to be fit and healthy, but with the fast lifestyle which most of us lead these days, helping kids stay healthy seems to be a tough job. With childhood obesity reaching alarming levels, it is time we take a look our kids’ life and don’t let them become victims of obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, kidney problems, heart attacks, stroke, hypertension, etc. Even if your kid is not obese but eating junk foods, you should still read this article because if he continues with his present lifestyle, it is only a matter of time before he would be displaying a big fat belly like his peers!

Teaching our kids the benefits of following healthy eating habits can help control childhood obesity to an extent. In this article I will offer you four simple eating tips which have worked wonders for my own kids. I am sure you would find them equally helpful!

1. Don’t let them have soda: Soda is probably the number one enemy of your kid, in that it would make him gain weight by leaps and bounds! The only approach to control your kid’s soda intake is to find alternative ways to quench his thirst. Water of course is the best medicine, but children are not always willing to drink plain water. So what would you do? Well, you could add low-fat or low-calorie flavors into water to make it tasty! Just be sure to check the calorie and fat contents of the flavors you use!

Further, you can also add a tablespoonful of sugar in water to make it sweet. Children often drink soda mainly because of its sweet taste, but once they find a good substitute in ’sugary-water’, it would be easy to prod them to dump soda for good. Remember that a can of soda contains an equivalent of several tablespoonfuls of sugar; if you could substitute that with just one or two tablespoonfuls of sugar, don’t you think it is a better and healthier option?

2. Be an example: Preaching the rules of healthy eating to your kids is of no use if you don’t follow them yourself! Bear in mind that kids would pick up a bad habit from you quicker than a good one. If you wish to keep your kids healthy, you would also need to lead a healthy lifestyle!

3. Educate your kids adequately: There are several ways to do this. Say, when you shop for grocery, teach your kids how to pick up healthy foods and snacks for themselves, how to identify the high-calorie and sugary foods, etc.

4. Discard junk foods out of your home: It is also important that you clean your kitchen cupboards as well as refrigerator of all the junk foods and stock them with healthier alternatives instead, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc. If you keep only healthy foods at home at all times, your kids are less likely to stray than otherwise!

When you have your meals, you should not only eat healthy foods yourself, but also show them how much you enjoy eating those foods. If you have a habit of munching on a packet of chips or popcorn while watching your favorite movie, you should try it with apples or carrots; if you really need to eat popcorn, cook them at home using low-calorie oil or margarine instead of butter!
