Low Calorie Desserts: Should You Consume Them?

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

When it comes to weight loss, our natural instinct is to cut down drastically on our calorie intake. After all, didn’t that doctor tell us that we needed to keep our calorie intake in check for fast weight loss? This is the reason why we tend to focus on eating low calorie foods all the time.

If you have decided to consume only low calorie desserts from now on, it means that you have become much more health conscious by deciding to take control of your daily calorie intake. This is indeed a good decision. However, focusing exclusively on low calorie desserts is not a good idea!

What if I tell you that in reality, low calorie foods would eventually make you gain weight? If that sounds crazy to your ears, here is a simpler explanation: when you focus on eating only low calorie foods, your body tries to keep your metabolic rate at a low level. Think about it, does your body really need to keep your metabolic rate high for burning off low calorie foods? Obviously not!

That is why, even though you may be able to lose a few pounds initially with the help of a low-calorie diet, a point may come when you won’t be able to shed any more pounds. It is important to note that the weight you lost contained very little fat and more muscles and water. Once you lose your valuable muscles, it becomes all the more difficult for you to maintain your weight. This is exactly why followers of low calorie diet plans are seldom able to lose weight permanently!

Introducing calorie cycling method.

The calorie cycling method of dieting is based on the low calorie diet; however, it brings on a new and refreshing change by introducing the concept of ‘cheat days’. What this means to you is that - while you continue eating low calorie foods as usual, you are also given the option to eat high calorie foods on a given day.

This way, your body becomes shocked and confused as to at which level to keep your metabolic rate! Consequently, it concludes that it is better to be safe than sorry by keeping your metabolic rate at a high level. This is the ideal situation for you since the higher your metabolic rate is, the faster you are able to burn those extra pounds!

Okay okay, enough of rambling. I know that you have been eagerly waiting for getting a few ideas on low calorie desserts, and I promise that you won’t be disappointed. There are a huge number of low calorie desserts out there, way too many to list here, but my top choices are the following: fudgsicles, smoothies made of fruits, yogurt (the low-fat variety), popsicles, sorbet, skinny cow ice cream, Jell-O (the sugar-free variety), etc.

Plus, don’t forget that several calorie-rich foods have low calorie substitutes. For example, how does the idea of consuming egg whites instead of whole eggs sound? Or, how about consuming skimmed milk instead of regular milk? Unlike skimmed milk, regular milk is not only high on fat but also difficult to digest!

I hope this article has offered you some low calorie dessert ideas!

Good Nutrition from the Ground Up

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

It is a relatively basic fact that good nutrition comes from the earth. Newsflash ” over the past 100 years there has been a serious depletion in the value of our foods. This decrease in our food value has not gone without notice; in fact in recent years the International Medical Geology Association was formed to address these global health concerns.

I turned my focus to nutrition after reading an article, The Emerging Medical and Geological Association. Foods should be rich with both vitamins and minerals, and minerals are derived from many geological sources.

Not only are we faced with decreased food values, pound for pound, but we must also look at the many other issues affecting the primal source of life. Toxicity has risen due to the disturbances to the soil, and we must face the destructive nature of mercury and arsenic.

Health studies around the world in a vast array of medical concerns have identified both global and regional imbalances. For example, there are over 425 million people in China that are at risk for a thyroid condition called Goiter, and the low iodine content in bedrock. Goiter is a serious condition worldwide, mostly in the developing countries.

Lets focus a minute on iodine. In the USA the deficiency of iodine was known nearly a hundred years ago. Studies have continued worldwide since that time, and regulations created to include iodine in the average diet. The inclusion of iodine into diets has typically been through table salt, though that might be of concern today with so much emphasis on a low-sodium diet. But iodine is important, and deficiencies have been tied to low IQ, birth defects and miscarriages.

Our health and wellness will not be sustained through the grocery or health food, but through our actions to work with the earth. We still have choices we can make, both in our individual dietary choices and interaction with the earth. We can also join together in a global voice to care for our precious planet.

The Perfect Foods For Calorie Shifting Diet!

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

For a considerable time, several weight loss experts have recommended the calorie shifting diet as the next best weight loss solution. While it is true to an extent. Rarely do those experts recommend the ideal foods for the diet in the same vein. This leaves the common people confused.

If you already know about the benefits of the calorie shifting dieting program but have no idea of what to eat and what not to eat, this article would be the ideal read for you! For the five minutes you spend in reading it, you would collect some great recipe ideas that could form an integral part of your life!

The name ‘calorie shifting’ itself is pregnant with meaning! You can simply figure out that this diet recommends “shifting” your calorie consumption levels instead of restricting yourself to a low-calorie or low-carb meal!

Unlike the conventional fad diets, this dieting method makes you burn fat without forcing you to starve or eat boring foods; on top of that, you can also satiate your junk food cravings with this dieting method. Now isn’t that something quite unheard of?

The calorie shifting diet would teach you that food is your friend and NOT enemy, and as such, you should eat as much food as you need. Even though the calorie shifting diet restricts your daily calorie intake to a certain level, this level is fairly much higher compared to other fad diets.

With calorie shifting, you would be consuming a lot more calories than you would, say, with the South Beach or the Detox diet, and yet you burn fat and lose weight faster than those diets! Calorie shifting requires you to eat foods of varying calorie contents, ranging from low-calorie to high-calorie.

As a matter of fact, with this dieting method, you won’t even realize that you are dieting, since your eating habits are more or less kept at a normal level. However, if you have been eating junk foods day in and day out or surviving on a piece or carrot or cabbage, then of course you would notice a huge change as none of these abnormal food habits are allowed under the calorie shifting method of dieting!

I have kept the best for the last. The best part of this program is that you won’t have to workout if you don’t want to, although I highly recommend workouts to all my clients, even if you spend no more than 10-15 minutes on it per day!

Now the foods. With the calorie shifting diet, you can have fatty foods such as cheese, fishes, etc, as well as protein-rich foods such as eggs and lean chicken breast. Your carb intake is not restricted as well; you can consume carbs in the form of organic fruits and vegetables. Most of these organic fruits and vegetables are also rich in fiber, which means they would keep you full for a long time and suppress your hunger effectively!

And of course, junk foods such as chocolates, burgers, pastries, etc., are also allowed. Although there are some restrictions on your junk food intake, you won’t ever feel deprived! Let’s say that if you eat a lot of burgers on one day, the very next day you have to eat only low-calorie fruits, thereby balancing the “act”. With this diet, you are least likely to ‘cheat’ because your junk food cravings are satiated fully!

And here is the real shocker: while most conventional diet programs last for months or even years, the calorie shifting diet lasts only for 11 days straight, after which you are given a 4-day “cheat period” when you could eat whatever you want, including junk foods!

The Perfect Recipe for Quick Weight Loss!

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

If you want to lose weight rapidly while keeping your junk food buddies close to you, then calorie shifting dieting is ideal for you! With calorie shifting, you don’t need to keep eating the same types of foods day after day. You can lose weight by eating different foods on different days, and those foods could range from low-calorie to high-calorie foods. Now, if you are wondering how you could possibly lose weight with such a diet, read on to find out the answer!

To give you an idea of how quickly you can lose weight with the help of calorie shifting diet, let me tell you that you can shed as much as seven pounds every week; compare this with a low calorie diet with which you can lose no more than 2 pounds per week!

With calorie shifting method, you would be eating low calorie meals one day and have a high calorie diet on the very next day. Or if you want, you can even have a combination of low-calorie and high-calorie foods in your daily diet!

This way, your body is kept guessing your calorie intake level and as a result, it keeps the metabolic rate high at all times just to be on safe side. If on one day, you happen to have an unusually high-calorie intake, it would be difficult for your body to burn those high-calorie foods with a low metabolic rate, and the opposite is equally true!

Since your metabolic rate always remains at a high level, you are bound to lose weight very fast!

Obviously, the high calorie foods are usually junk foods, while the low calorie foods are natural fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, fishes, etc. With such a rich diet, you are very unlikely to become bored, ever!

The calorie shifting dieting approach also requires that you eat small meals at regular intervals. You simply need to break your present large-sized meals into five or six small-sized ones, and have each of these meals every two or three hours. Spacing out the meals this way would help keep your calorie intake at the desired level, thus ensuring that you get rid of the extra flab quickly and easily!

The calorie shifting dieting also recommends that you drink at least eight glasses of water per day!

In short, the calorie shifting dieting focuses more on the type and quality of the foods you eat and less on your daily calorie intake level! Think about it: if you consume a lot of burgers regularly, you will gain weight, and even if you eat only low-calorie salads of the same quantity, you are not going to keep the weight away permanently either! However, combine the two, along with a healthy dose of protein intake in the form of lean chicken meat and eggs, and you have got the perfect recipe for rapid weight loss!

2 Tips to Help Your Kids Shed Their Fat Bellies!

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

People learn only from their peers, and this holds true for adults as well as kids. It is no secret that the level of childhood obesity in the world is rising alarmingly with every passing year. Even though parents always blame their kids’ unhealthy lifestyle habits as the root cause of obesity, the fact remains that if parents are willing, they can change those habits during the growing years of their children.

Take note that a stitch in time saves nine; if you nip these bad habits of your kids in the bud then they would always remain fit and healthy. If you are clueless about what to do in this direction, I will tell offer you two tips on that!

Make no mistake, even though now I am a fitness professional, I too was a big, fat ugly kid disliked by my class mates and neighbors alike! Just like your kids I too loved all the tasty and yummy junk foods my parents used to feed me.

My parents believed that I would cry less if they were to pamper me with delicious foods all the time; however this didn’t help at all as I cried even after all that ‘pampering’; if anything, I fell prey to unhealthy eating habits for which I had to pay dearly later on.

When I grew up a little, Mac Donalds became my regular destination and their burgers my all-time favorites! To top it all, my parents even took me to a doctor for they thought I was grossly underweight and malnourished, and oddly enough, that doctor only gave reassurance to my parents’ fears!

I don’t even need to tell you the end result of it all; soon I had a fatty belly and a pair of flabby arms which I detested very much (even though my parents seem to have no issues with them).

After keeping up with the taunts of my schoolmates for a while, I thought that enough was enough, and one day made up my mind that I would lose weight no matter what!

1. Encourage your kids to idolize professional athletes and bodybuilders: These days, kids usually idolize movie stars and prefer to sit on the couch the entire day and watch movies of their favorite idols. There is nothing wrong with hero worship at all, as long as it helps your kids stay fit and avoid weight gain. Idolizing movie heroes and heroines won’t be of any use to them; on the other hand, idolizing professional sportspersons, body builders and athletes would really help them stay active all the time. While it is true that I indulged in hula hopping because it was a very popular sport among our neighborhood kids, I played tennis mainly because famous tennis players such as Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick were my idols (they still are).

When kids consider athletes to be their heroes, they like to emulate their active lifestyle and have a have a healthy body like them. As a result, your kids would start eating healthy and indulging regularly in outdoor games!

2. Don’t stop your kids from participating in sports: So when I decided to lose weight, I started spending much more time in my favorite sports than I used to!! Thankfully, unlike the parents of some of my peers, my parents never prohibited me from indulging in outdoor sports.

Take a cue from this: if you are a parent and wish to keep your kids fit and healthy then keeping them from indulging in sports is just stupid! Far from making your kids sit at home and forcing them to stick their eyes on books throughout the whole day, you should actually encourage them to become active in life, since only active kids are able to keep the fat away for the rest of their lives!

Really, that is the only thing I did, apart from changing my unhealthy eating habits, in order to acquire the fit body that I still maintain! And you thought it was too hard to help your kids lose weight!

3 Palate Training Tips to Help Your Kids Avoid Weight Gain!

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

If you thought your kids have gotten their junk food eating habits from peers, you may not be wholly true! Habits start quite early in the life of a human, and if your kid is taught the benefits of healthy eating right from infancy, they are less likely to indulge in junk food eating out of peer pressure, if at all, than otherwise! A formula which works very well in this case is palate training.

Contrary to its name, this formula is quite simple and straightforward, in that it doesn’t require any expert knowledge on your part! It was invented by two members of the Good Food Village Trust, Louise Rutten and Mitzy Wilson! Palate training is all about training the tastebuds of your kids in such a way that they start loving natural and healthy foods much more than those yummy fast foods! So let’s get right on it as to how to start training the palates of your kids!

1. Let them appreciate natural foods: Your kids would eat organic foods only when they love them! From quite an early age, you should educate your children that beets or carrots don’t taste bad! Conventional preaching doesn’t work too well in case of kids for whom, seeing is believing.

So you could go a bit further, peel off a carrot and let your kid lick it with his tongue or chop it off and ask him to put a piece on one side of his mouth and keep it there for a few moments to enjoy the taste. Such small and gradual steps would make your kid addicted to carrots! In fact, you can use this formula for any food you want your kids to eat!

2. Don’t encourage bad habits at home: While it is true that you don’t have absolute control over what your kid eats when he is out of home, you could still control his eating habits in a number of methods.

For example, when he goes to school, pack his lunch box with healthy fruits and vegetables. If your kid doesn’t eat it at school, make him eat the same at home. It is still possible that your kid may have a bite of pizza or hamburger at school or a sip of soft drink at a friend’s party! However, they won’t get addicted to them if you don’t allow those foods at home, since a kid needs to eat a particular food at least 14-15 for him to get addicted to it!

3. Walk the talk: It is easy to preach the benefits of healthy eating to your kids but do YOU follow your own advice? Remember that kids have a tendency to emulate the adults, particularly their parents, and if they catch you enjoying a packet of chips on a lazy Saturday evening, why would they be contented with a carrot or cabbage? If you wish to inculcate good eating habits in your kids, you need to adopt them yourself first!

Be Sure To Include Fish In Your Diet For Those Good Fatty Acids

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

If you have school age children in the house, you’ve probably been introduced to the new and improved “Food Pyramid” courtesy of the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture). A great deal of research goes into developing the basis for a balanced diet, what we need to eat and why we need a variety of nutritious foods.

When we think of the food groups, we often think of protein first. It’s a big category that includes the heavy hitters - meat and poultry. However, fish is an important part of this food group and not just as an alternative to meat or poultry. Fish should be included in every well-balanced diet along with, not instead of, meat and poultry.

So isn’t all protein alike? If I eat a steak or a chicken breast I’m getting my protein, so why should I add fish to my diet? Does fish offer something other than what I’m getting from the other protein sources? What if I don’t eat fish… what will I be missing?

If you are living on a diet that includes meat and poultry as your only source of protein, you are missing out on the fatty acids, or “good fat”, that you need for a healthy heart. By including fish as one of your proteins, you will be adding an essential nutrition that you can’t find in a diet that consists of only meat and poultry.

Technically speaking, MUFAs (monounsaturated fatty acids) and PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) are essential for your health, and you cannot create these elements in your body from other fats that you eat. We’ve all heard of the “omega-3 fatty acids”, which is believed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Salmon, trout, and herring are said to have a high level of this healthy fatty acid.

If you have not served your family a lot of fish in the past, it’s never too late to start. Depending on where you live, you should be able to find either fresh or frozen readily available in your grocery store. Watch the sales and fill your grocery cart with a variety of fish. Then, look through some recipes and pick a few simple ones to try.

You can start as simply as making some Pan Fried Fish, or going all out with a more complete Oven Fish Dinner. One of my favorites is a classic Fish Chowder. Don’t forget the very versatile tuna. Making a Quick and Easy Tuna Casserole may be a good first try, but I’d move on to something more interesting like Tuna Cheese Puffs just to keep the family from getting tired of the same kinds of dishes. Don’t forget to give Salmon Patties a try, too, as they are a real treat and may even become your family’s Sunday dinner favorite.

Start serving fish each week by trying a few simple recipes and you may discover that you and your family enjoy having a little more variety at meal time. Make notes about which types of dishes your family enjoyed, and which ones were not so much of a hit, and soon you’ll be collecting your very own favorite fish recipes.

Going Bananas

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

The phrase “going bananas” has a surprising history, more so because its meaning has been totally reversed now. The phrase came into being because of the cooling and relaxing effect of the banana on the brain. But in this age, “going bananas” is used for the condition of going nuts or going mad. Surprising isn’t it?

The health advantages of bananas are numerous. Many popular dishes can be prepared using bananas like banana split, banana shake and banana pie. Banana is made up of three natural sugars like glucose, fructose and sucrose which is why banana boosts the energy level of the body. Athletes eat bananas to stay energized for longer time spans and for superior performance. Recent studies show that eating banana can keep the body fully keyed up for a 90 minute workout.

Banana is also useful for anemic patients because of its high zinc and iron content. It aids in the production of hemoglobin and also controls the blood pressure. It is rich in potassium with low amounts of salt which makes it an ideal fruit for patients suffering high blood pressure. It also keeps the heart healthy and clean and prevents the risk of cardiac arrests and stroke.

Bananas are rich in tryptophan which has the ability to control depression, relieving stress and stabilizing moods. It is a very beneficial fruit for students as it helps to increase the level of concentration, keeps the mind focused, and increases brain power.

The nervous system also benefits from the advantages of banana. It soothes the nervous system with its B vitamins. It is a fiber rich fruit which makes it ideal for sufferers of constipation. Pregnant women should also derive benefits from it as it can alleviate morning sickness and stomach disorders.

It is a common belief that bananas increase weight gain due to their high sugar content. But scientists have proven this misconception wrong by establishing the fact that bananas can actually assist in losing weight as they can control food yearnings. This tropical fruit has a very relaxing effect on the body.

Banana is very beneficial for those people who are resisting the urges to smoke and drink alcohol as the magnesium in it can help alleviate the negative consequences of tobacco withdrawal. Bananas are helpful in treating ulcers as they are assimilated quickly. Even the inside of the banana peel has many uses. It acts as a perfect shoe shine and can cure the swelling of mosquito bites.

Bananas are an excellent source of promoting sound health. There are various ways in which you can include them in your diet to make them tastier. You can make a banana smoothie or eat it with peanut butter instead of jam. Bananas can also be used in desserts. Banana yoghurt can also be prepared by using mashed bananas. Thus including bananas in your diet not only promotes wellness but also keeps you happy, relaxed and fully energized. Eating it in breakfast is a wise way to derive its maximum advantage. So start today and build up your strength for tomorrow.

Fundamental Basketball Play - Cut Through

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

Fundamental plays are the most basic moves that coaches use to build up their play book. A coach will take a fundamental play and add his or her own twist, or slightly change the play, to make it his own. In some cases, the play works out in the traditional sense so well that no change is needed.

One of the top fundamental plays in basketball is the cut through. This play is very popular and something you have probably done or seen on the court before. It is an important play for moving the players and the ball across the court to get into the ideal position by the basket.

The Basics of the Play

The cut through involves cutting a player across to the other side of the court. Cutting means basically going through the opposing team to the other side in a quick, sharp movement.

This play is used to attack the defense zone. It can really help to break up defense that is heavy or otherwise blocking the play.

Cutting helps to create a screen or open area where the defense is held off and the player can pass or shoot the ball. The cut through play opens up a wide screen that allows for good play.

Tips for the Cut Through Play

When performing the cut through play it is important that players remember the two step rule still applies. It can be easy for the player with the ball to forget this.

When cutting, the cutter and the screener should pass shoulder to shoulder with the screener opening up toward the ball. This play is best used when passing is blocked or the defensive blocking is really strong.

There are some different options coaches often use during this play. They involve different players depending on the action on the court. It is a play where the result is really dictated by what is happening now, and not a play that is planned out in advance.

The cut through play is a fundamental play because every team will encounter a time in the game when the defense is really on their game, making passing and even moving the ball difficult. This play allows for the court to be opened up and gives the player with the ball more options as to what to do.

It is a great saving grace type play that a coach can call in a last minute effort to beat the clock and get the ball to the basket. The cut through play is most likely to be found in every coach’s play book and something that every coach will use at one point or another.

This is why it is a fundamental play, because it is a reliable play that works. The cut through play is something that players are often taught when taught the fundamentals of basketball. Most coaches will run this play with their team on a regular basis just to ensure it is something they know well and will be able to pull off when needed on the court.
