Making You Home Wheelchair Accessible

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Currently, it’s a buyer’s market for houses, so getting your dream home is a snap, right? What changes, though, if a buyer’s dream home has to be Electric Wheel Chair accessible? Locating an existing home that is also wheelchair accessible it hard to do. It’s more practical to stick with the home you currently own and, if permissible, customize your home to be wheelchair accessible. A simpler course of action, though not necessarily cheaper, is to erect a new house. Whichever of those options you decide on; what follows are a few universal pieces of advice to start with.

Obviously, a two-story home is not usually considered wheelchair accessible. Staircases can be challenges, and even motorized lifts must have substantially more square footage than residential staircases are designed to fill. If you might avoid upstairs sleeping quarters or finished basements in a structure; do it. Ramps are practical for sunken living rooms, but dramatic alterations in floor level usually give you more conundrums than they cure. So you really have to be careful.

If you currently are using a second story, it’s worth finding out if a full service elevator is possible. After your floors are settled, though, you ought to plan your floor coverings. Scatter rugs will not help you, because they are famous for becoming wrapped up in wheels. Carpets should work fine, assuming you have wall-to-wall carpets or they include a beveled trim edge that will be nailed to the floor. It is really easier than it sounds.

If you’ve been in a wheelchair for even a month or two, you have discovered that entryways and table heights are very important. A wheelchair accessible doorway ought to be a minimum of 32’ wide, and any work surfaces for a Mobility Chair user needs to be approximately 34” high. A wheelchair bound person can have difficulty reaching anything over 48” tall, so overhead doors or shelving should not contain anything important. This is something that is often overlooked.

A bathroom is meant to be an oasis of calm in today’s stressed-out world, therefore, your bathroom is not an area where you want to be constantly dealing with your physical condition. If you add nothing else, a 3 x 4

3 Natural Remedies for Cancer

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Experts believe that even those of us who carry genes that bring a predisposition to some types of cancer might be able to reduce the risks by living a healthy lifestyle and adopting natural remedies for cancer.

A third of the most common cancers in the U.S. might be prevented by adopting healthier habits.

The trouble is, todays culture is full of unhealthy choices that are more convenient and more affordable.

There are three key things you can do to help yourself improve the odds of staying healthy and cancer free. This according to the American Institute for Cancer Research, AICR, a charity that encourages research on the relationship of nutrition and managing weight on cancer risk.

1. Eat a mostly plant based diet ” that is mostly fruits, veggies and whole grains, little or no sugary, processed foods (fast foods too) as well as keeping intake of red meat to 18 ounces a week and salt intake to no more than 2.4 grams per day. Alcohol can be enjoyed in small amounts, that is 1 drink a day for women, 2 drinks per day for men.

2. Keep your weight in a healthy range - BMI between 21 and 23 is considered good for improving your odds. The lower end of the BMI range is even better when it comes to cancer risk. Its also important to try and not gain too much weight as an adult, though if you have, losing even a few of those extra pounds can bring benefits to your body.

3. Exercise regularly - being moderately active for 30 minutes, working up to 60 minutes a day is also key. If your exercise routine is especially rigorous, thirty minutes a day is just fine. Limit how much time you spend in front of the TV or computer just sitting.

The data is pretty clear that we can make a significant drop in the cancer rate with these three changes, Karen Collins, a registered dietician and nutrition advisor for the AICR explains.

We can prevent about one-third of cancers with these changes. And if you add tobacco prevention, which reduces about 30 percent of cancers, over half of todays cancers could be prevented.

Of course these recommendations are not any guarantee of your future health, but they certainly improve the odds of staying healthier.

The experts believe that each healthy change helps encourage another one. If you are active you will eat better because good foods give you more energy, and the great feelings that come from exercise will keep you coming back for more.

Both these actions will have weight falling off, reinforcing your healthy habits and leaving you looking, and feeling, better than ever.

If you are a little concerned about cancer risk, or you’ve a family background with the disease, its a good idea to talk to your doctor about genetic counselling.

This process can help you and your family identify who among you might be at risk, and involves taking a very detailed family medical history (disease information about your brothers and sisters, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, children and grandchildren) so that the counsellor can assess your risk and guide you to the options open to you.

You might require just a single, hour-long session, or several, depending on your needs for genetic testing or follow up.

Of course even if you, or someone you love, carries a genetic risk, that does not mean you are going to get a disease like cancer. You can do something about it with natural remedies for cancer, starting now.

Next - just head on over to the Daily Health Bulletin for more information on natural remedies for cancer, plus for a limited time get 5 free fantastic health reports. Click here for details on the 3 natural remedies for cancer research.

Massage Chair Loosens Chiropractic Patients

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Many people have a misconception about doctors of chiropractic medicine. Most people do not realize that chiropractors only use natural therapies to help their patients. These doctors do not issue prescriptions. Instead, they are taught to rely on a number of natural methods to the body to its normal state. There are a variety of natural techniques used by chiropractors including manipulation of the spine. One such treatment which is becoming more popular is the use of massage chairs.

Most people do not realize that the art of chiropractic medicine started in ancient Egypt. Many different treatments have evolved throughout the years to help restore the health of the spine. Natural treatments are preferred as they are much more sustainable than other types of treatments.

Chiropractic medicine is known for its hands-on therapy. Most people are familiar with these types of doctors manipulating the spine. In fact the original word for chiropractor was coined by the ancient Greeks.

You can now find a variety of natural treatments to restore the spine to its normal state. The spine is a very complex part of the body. It includes the small bones which are stacked on top of each other called discs. These discs in turn are held together by ligaments, tendons and muscles.

The spine is responsible for two major functions. It must support the weight of the body and transmitted from the upper and lower portions. It also must act as a shock absorber. For example, if you jump up and down, the shock is absorbed partially by the spine.

If you have pain and discomfort in your back, then you should seek a chiropractor to perform a diagnosis of your situation. They will look to find the root cause of the problem. Once they know what is wrong then they have a variety of natural therapies to correct the situation.

Chiropractors have a variety of natural therapies at their disposal. They commonly may apply heat, electrical stimulation, massage chair therapy and chiropractic manipulation. These different therapies are used to relax the muscles and to better align the spine.

Many chiropractic doctors are utilizing massage chairs in their practice. They performed a variety of therapeutic treatments at the touch of a button. Most commonly they are used to loosen up tight back muscles prior to making alignments to the spinal column.

Massage chairs have been found to provide consistent massage therapy. They provide the same type of massage and pressure and don’t have the variation associated with human massages. They can also be set to provide massage for a specific duration and target a given area.

Massage chairs are the lowest cost provider of massage therapy. The typical massage chair has a life of 2000 hours. Although, they may cost $3000, they are designed to last for a long time. If you divide the cost of the massage chair by the number of hours of massage therapy you would get a cost of $1.50 per hour. This is much lower than having to pay a massage therapist to be on staff.

Many patients enjoy receiving a massage. It provides a relaxing environment with an MP3 player and headphones. Music helps the patient to relax while the massage chair provides full body massage therapy.

Now you too can get the same benefits of a massage chair in your own home. The same models that are being purchased for chiropractic offices are also available for in-home use. These massage chairs are the most cost-effective way to receive daily massage therapy.

How To Fight Anxiety Sweating And Take Control Of Your Life

Monday, June 29th, 2009

What would our lives be without stress? We wouldn’t recognize them. And with stress comes being anxious and churned up inside, and then the inevitable for a lot of us; anxiety sweating. What a pain. Your life in general suffers, your clothes suffer, your relationships suffer all because you are one of the unfortunate ones who remain in silence and embarrassment with your sweating problem hoping against hope that some day you will find a way to stop all of this. Just remember this, that you are not alone in your misery; not by a long shot. Anxiety can be traced all the way back to the days of the cavemen when they were prominent on the earth and were out hunting for food. Don’t you think they experienced anxiety sweating when they were trying to just drag home a few square meals in the form of a wooly mammoth and suddenly found that their little pointed sticks were no match for the beast and all at once they were running for their lives. Sure they were anxious and believe me, they were sweating. Well, we go through the same thing in our lives: road rage, depressing jobs, dysfunctional families; maybe not as dramatic, but stressful enough to cause anxiety and as a result, profuse sweating.

So now the question arises, what can you do about these stresses in your life and get this sweating problem under control. One of the first methods that comes to mind is biofeedback. You can control your breathing and your heart rate after you learn the ways to do so, and as a result you can calm yourself when stress begins to overtake you and stop the sweating before it gets out of hand. And then there are ways to get a handle on your everyday life; such as following a schedule that can be broken down into daily happenings and can be used to keep your comings and goings in order. Nothing causes stress more quickly than to have your life spinning out of control and you are watching it happen without being able to do anything about it. But don’t forget, also, that routine exercise can play a big part in reducing your stress and consequently your anxiety sweating, because when you feel good physically, and you are fit; then your mental outlook is much more positive also.

Okay, now let’s think of other ways to keep stress and anxiety under control as much as possible. How about your job. Make sure you allot the needed amount of time everyday that surrounds your work and keep it organized while balancing your work hours with your time at home. Don’t be constantly rushing around at home trying to catch up because you spent too much time at work; your homelife is just as important as anything else and it can suffer bigtime if you let the work/home balance get off kilter. And your finances. Let’s get them into a stable condition so that you don’t have to cringe every time you walk past the desk where the bills are, or don’t have to figure out a way to rob a bank just to pay the electric bill. Balance is important, and your bouts of anxiety sweating will decrease markedly as the sources of the stress do too.

Now we move to an area that can cause the most stresses in most folks’ lives: interpersonal relationships. How is your love life? Are you married, divorced, widowed, alone; what’s the story. How much of your waking time is spent worrying over your better half, or how to get out of an unhappy marriage, or how to plan the wedding day, or just not being popular on the dating scene. The more you let these factors control your thinking and your subsequent reactions to them, the more you will be susceptible to bouts of despair and the resulting anguish and anxiety that goes along with them. It’s time to take the bull by the horns if you are suffering in some kind of situation like any of these and take some action. Step back and look at the situation closely and evaluate what your options are and what you can do about them. Don’t think too much about it, you can overevaluate too; just stop waffling and become decisive and act. Remember we are trying to save your health here, and trying to stop all those bouts of anxiety sweating that have become regulars in your life.

Now we need to take into consideration just what is going on when your body reacts to stress and anxiety sweating in all its glory is the end result. We are still cavemen at heart. Genetically we have not progressed much from the days of outrunning the wooly mammoths and our bodies are designed to have just two choices on how to react to stress: stay and fight, or run like hell. We may have all the techno-stuff that our little hearts desire from cell phones to beds that react to us and cars that talk to us; but we still can’t manage the genetic programming that drives our inner core. When we are presented with a stressful situation, the body reacts by pumping out adrenaline from the adrenal glands so we can run like hell if we have to; but our more sophisticated brains say: “Wait a minute, this is not right, I’m going to do something about this and take care of the problem.” So we have an inner battle going on, and the body’s mechanisms are pumping out all kinds of chemicals that will help us either win the fight or make it over the next hill running our butts off. As a result, we sweat. The body is overheated with the fire of impending doom, and it is trying desperately to cool down and sweating is the means to that end. And because most profuse sweating of this sort is usually the result of some kind of stress in our lives that we can’t immediately squelch; then anxiety sweating is what rears its ugly head.

Okay, it’s one thing to talk about gaining control of all this stress that surrounds us, but how to do it. Well, one very good way that produces good results is to get more involved with the natural world around us, and let that part of our psyches react to the positive feelings that being out with Mother Nature can produce. Be aware of your surroundings as you make yourself available to the wonders that exist in the great outdoors, and let that positive reaction flow into your system and begin to reduce the stress level that exists within you. Just taking a simple walk will do the trick, but you must be involved with your surroundings and not just stroll along. You must listen, watch, smell and take in all the wonderful parts of the natural scene, and put aside all the techno-babble that can confound your every day life such as cell phones, pagers, or other technical toys so you can truly concentrate. As you become more and more proficient at communing with nature, you will find that your stress levels will markedly decrease and so will your bouts of anxiety sweating.

All being said and done: life is full of excitement, happiness, danger, and stress. You are the one that needs to take control and keep your life in balance so that the negatives don’t outweigh the positives. When there is too much negativity in your life and you have a hard time seeing the silver linings, then it is time you took stock of your way of living every day and examine it closely to see where you can make changes for the better and can make it a more positive experience. Opportunities are all around you and are there for the taking; you just need to recognize them, and recognize that you need to make changes that will allow you the freedom to grab some of them before they all pass you by. Life is one big parade, and there is no better way to live it fully than to stop standing on the sidelines with your anxiety sweating consuming you, and step into the line of march, get in step, feel the rhythm of the positive drum beat, free yourself of worries, and go for it.
