MMA Flashback: ‘Babalu’ Cuts Up Southworth To Take Strikeforce Title

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Renato Babalu Sobral defeated Bobby Southworth by TKO to become Strikeforce light heavyweight champion in the co-main event of the promotions ‘Destruction’ card on Friday night. Despite leaving with the belt around his waist, it wasn’t a highlight reel worthy finish.

A -350 wagering favorite despite his challenger status, Sobral was expected to use his world class Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills and vast experience against superior competition to dominate the tough but limited Southworth. It didnt happen that way, as Southworth easily got the better of things in the first round. Southworths style isnt exactly one that provides Wanderlei Silva type excitement–he looks to use his strength and conditioning to control his opponent en route to a decision victory. While the result makes him something of a MMA equivalent to boxing’s John Ruiz, it does afford him the best chance of victory.

The first round displayed Southworth’s style in microcosm, with much of the frame spent pushing Babalu up against the cage or on the ground inside his guard not really doing much. Sobral had one effective strike the entire round”and it would decide the fight. During a clinch against the cage wall the challenger rocked Southworth with a hard elbow strike that not only busted his nose but opened a huge cut over his right eye.

Upon seeing the gusher of blood Referee John McCarthy brought the ringside physician over to take a look. The doctor took some time to examine the cut, but eventually the round resumed following the consultation with only a few seconds remaining. As Southworth’s corner futilely worked on the gaping wound during the break the doctor once again took a look and better realizing the severity and placement of the cut recommended to McCarthy that the fight be stopped. The veteran official complied, awarding Sobral the TKO victory and the championship belt.

The other half of the co-main event was decided in much more decisive fashion as Scott Smith knocked out well traveled veteran Terry Martin in a mere :24 seconds. Unfortunately, Martin didn’t adequately close the distance against a fighter dubbed ‘Hands of Steel’ and was caught with a perfectly placed punch that knocked him out cold.

In the semifinal event, Duane ‘Bang’ Ludwig defeated Yves Edwards by unanimous decision in a very closely contested bout. Edwards was originally slated to face lightweight champion Josh Thomson until a toe injury necessitated his withdrawal. Ludwig took the fight on two weeks notice, and after a takedown clinic by Edwards in the first began to control the fight with his superior standup skills. Edwards’ superiority on the ground in the first two frames wasnt enough to sway the judges who obviously favored Ludwig’s more effective striking.

Earlier in the evening, Kim Couture made short work of overmatched Lina Kvokov as she TKOd her foe in 1:44 of the first round. Couture, the wife of UFC legend Randy Couture, gained even more notoriety for the courage she displayed in her professional debut last June. She had a much easier time here”despite the fact that both fighters entered with 0-1 records Couture was significantly more polished as she put Kvokov on the defensive from the outset with her sharp punching combinations. She recovered momentarily and survived the initial onslaught. The reprieve was only temporary, however, as Couture launched another barrage of punches prompting the referee to step in and wave off the non-competitive affair.

Nervous Breakdown

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

A nervous breakdown refers to a mainstream and often-used term to generically describe someone who experiences a bout of mental illness that is so severe, it directly impacts their ability to function in everyday life. The specific mental illness can be anything - depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or something else. But the reference to a “nervous breakdown” usually refers to the fact that the person has basically stopped their daily routines - going to work, interacting with loved ones or friends, even just getting out of bed to eat or shower.

A nervous breakdown can be seen as a sign that one’s ability to cope with life or a mental illness has been overwhelmed by stress, life events, work or relationship issues. By disconnecting from their regular responsibilities and routines, an individual’s nervous breakdown may allow them to try and regroup their coping skills and temporarily relieve the stress in their life.

Someone with a nervous breakdown may be seen as having “checked out” from society temporarily. They no longer maintain their social relationships with others, and find it difficult or impossible to go to work and may call in sick multiple days in a row. People with a nervous breakdown often don’t even have the coping resources available to take care of themselves, or do much more than rudimentary self-care and maintaining. They may over-eat (if it provides them comfort) or simply fail to eat altogether, not feeling the need or energy to do so.

Since a nervous breakdown is not a clinical or scientific term, it’s meaning can also vary in terms of its length and severity, as well as outcomes. Many people who suffer from a nervous breakdown usually seek out treatment (or have treatment sought out on their behalf by a loved one), and treatment is usually on the serious end of the spectrum of all the interventions available. Inpatient hospitalization for a serious nervous breakdown would not be unusual, to help a person become stabilized and find an effective treatment strategy for the mental disorder they’re affected by.

People who suffer from a nervous breakdown and seek out treatment for it will usually recover from the most extreme depths of the “breakdown” within a few weeks’ time (which may be quickened with inpatient psychiatric treatment). Longer-term recovery usually takes months of ongoing outpatient treatment with mental health specialists, such as a psychiatrist or psychologist.

A nervous breakdown is not a condition to be afraid of, as it is simply an indication of overhwelming stress and mental illness in a person’s life. Loved ones and friends of someone who is suffering from a nervous breakdown should be supportive of the individual’s efforts in seeking help for it.

Dementia Managing

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Part of the problem in finding drugs which may be effective for dementia is that our ideas about what constitutes dementia have been undergoing radical change in recent years. It had been traditional to distinguish between Alzheimer’s dementia, or senile dementia of the Alzheimer’s type (SDAT) and multi-infarct dementia (MID), which is theoretically caused by small strokes which insidiously pick off brain tissue to the point where an individual’s cognitive function is compromised.

It was originally thought that MID accounted for 60%+ of the dementias. Accordingly, early attempts to treat the dementias concentrated on the multi-infarct dementias. The initial hypothesis was that these multiple small strokes were being caused by a process of hardening of the arteries, sometimes called arteriosclerosis and sometimes atherosclerosis (although these terms refer to two quite different disorders) which impaired blood supply to the brain. The logical treatment, therefore, for this condition was to attempt to dilate blood vessels. This led to the use of a wide number of vasodilating drugs such as hydralazine.

It is quite rare now for such drugs to be used for this purpose. Arguably, if anything, such treatment may have made the condition somewhat worse in that a potential effect of vasodilators is the reduction of blood pressure and reducing blood pressure would mean that the brain would be less perfused with blood, as one of the functions of blood pressure in the first instance is to provide the propulsive force to send blood up against the force of gravity to perfuse the brain.

Stage 2

More recent attempts to treat the dementias have proceeded on the basis that Alzheimer’s dementia is the commonest form of dementia. For many years, the term Alzheimer’s dementia was reserved for dementias that came on before the age of 65 (for this reason it was also called persenile dementia), which were not obviously caused by strokes. It was conceded that there was another dementia that was like Alzheimer’s dementia, which appeared to come on after the age of 65 but this was thought to be less common. Distinctions on the basis of age have now collapsed and both dementias of the Alzheimer type are now called senile dementia of the Alzheimer type. The amalgamation of these two groups led to an awareness that Alzheimer’s-type dementia is the commonest form. The primary therapeutic focus in the field, therefore, has been on an attempt to reverse the deficits which are supposed to be present in SDAT.

In particular, it has been held that in Alzheimer’s, there is a dysfunction of cholinergic pathways in the brain, for which there are both historical and clinical reason. Historically, when early work in psychopharmacology began, there were only four known neurotransmitters - noradrenaline, 5-HT, dopamine and acetylcholine (ACh). Noradrenaline quickly became the neurotransmitter involved in depression and mood disorders. Dopamine was known to be involved in Parkinson’s disease, and, when it became clear that neuroleptics acted on it, schizophrenia, after which the psychoses in general came to be seen as disorders of dopamine neurotransmission. For the most part, 5-HT was associated with either depression or anxiety. This left ACh without a function. It seemed convenient to parcel it out to the dementias.

There was, in addition, some clinical evidence in favour of an association between the cholinergic system and dementia. Part of the reason for this claim can be seen in a number of the chapters of this blog, in which drugs with anticholinergic effects have been noted as potentially causing amnesia or confusion (see The Management of Side Effects & Side Effects of Antidepressants articles).

Stage 3

In the last 5 years, a number of other dementias have been described. A distinction has been drawn between cortical and subcortical dementias. The cortex of the brain is the area responsible for higher cognitive functions, such as speaking, reading, planning and executing actions, etc In the cortical dementias, memory is usually the function most noticeably affected but those who are affected also have problems with planning even simple functions such as dressing and they typically cannot read, draw or execute any complex tasks. Alzheimer’s and MID are cortical dementias. There are also subcortical parts to the brain which are common to humans and other mammals. They involve a number of what are termed midbrain and brainstem structures.

Shopping for a Golf Club Set that will Boost Your Golf Scores

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

In golf you want to buy a golf club set that is tailored to your swing. This isn’t the only thing you have to consider, but purchasing the wrong clubs could be detrimental to your overall score. Golf is all about repeating the right swing over and over, and if you don’t have the right clubs it could take months to reprogram your thinking.

In the beginning, figure out what type of shaft you would like to use. You will have the option of choosing between graphite and steel. While either one can do its job appropriately, it’s the shaft’s flex that is important. Buying a golf club set with this in mind will allow you to keep or even add distance to your swing. If you don’t, you could be playing zigzag golf down the fairways.

Once you’ve chosen your shaft, you will need to know your swing speed. While this may not sound important now, it actually helps you figure out what type of flex is best for your swing. Golfing is a very complex sport when it comes to the technical side of buying a golf club set. For instance, if your flex is too strong then there isn’t enough torque at impact. This leads to a loss of yardage when using any of your clubs.

There are five variations you can choose from in regards to flexes. Whether it’s an extra stiff flex, a ladies flex, the regular flex, the senior flex, or even the stiff flex, they are all available. When you overcome this obstacle, it’s time to choose the brand of club you will be using. There are so many we can’t list them all here, but Taylor Made, Callaway, and Titleist are the most popular.

The brand is going to be a personal choice when it comes to buying a golf club set. While any of them will work, you have to get the right loft or degree for each club. This means you have to get your swing tested and find out the exact location of impact. Yes, getting the ball in the air correctly will be a huge part of your golfing game. The good news is when you’re passed this point; the grip is your final decision.

The grip is very important as it helps you to hold the club correctly. It does not matter whether you hold the club with a strong grip or a weak grip any of the types of grips will work. It is just about having the correct thickness so that the club feels right in your hands. This is also the least expensive part of buying a golf club set.

If at all possible before you actually commit to buying a new golf club set, try out the configurations that you have decided on. Make sure when you are standing over the ball that it feels good to you and that it also looks good. It is important that you feel comfortable over the ball. Remember that most manufacturers will not allow you to try them out on the course first but many have indoor facilities to test them.

If you can find all these things when buying a golf club set, your golfing will be much more enjoyable. The right set will help improve your game, boost your scores, and all just feel right in your hands. In golf, all it takes is one great shot to bring you back for more. Buy the right golf club set and practice, and you will have a lot more than just one great shot in your future.

The foundation degree is flexible which really meets the needs of all potential students. It can be taken either on a full time or part time basis. This goes a long way in affording the individual who is currently working to embark on another career without having to quit their current job. This reduces much of the financial burden that is often placed on a student.

The courses that are within the Foundation degrees are structured to ensure that they are pertinent to the Industry which in this case in Hairdressing. As we mentioned this Program has either full time or part time options. Students that have competed their first level or A Level at College find it a great opportunity to progress from the completion of their college segment right into this program. If this is the choice then it will take two years to fully complete the foundation degree. This is naturally a much quicker method for the student to attain their overall goal of becoming a hairdresser.

There are some students though that cannot utilize the full time program because of various reasons. For example, they may be in the midst of a career changes and finances require they continue working at an unrelated job while in training for their new chosen career of hairdressing. This means the end goal will not be met until approximately 3-4 years, depending on the time availability of the student.

Beyond this degree, the graduate can venture onto an Honors degree if they wish to advance within the industry. This doesn?t take as long as one would think; in fact, it can be achieved within 12-15 months.

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Discover this wonderful sport called rock climbing. There are different techniques and skills you need as well as the different styles when you go rock climbing. Everywhere in the world wherever this sport is practiced is now becoming very popular.

This is a sport in which people climb across or up man made rock walls or natural rock formations and the ultimate goal is to reach the top of the peak or whichever the groups or instructor has chosen. This sport requires the person to use their hands which hold onto their own weight and not just rely on balance.

This sport only really began around the late 1900’s but prior to this it was known as Victorian mountaineering. And from an alpine necessity it then developed into a sport and basically started in parts of Europe. There was specified equipment that acted as a hand foothold technique which aided climbers. Without this equipment it would have been impossible to climb as well as very dangerous.

Free climbing is what this is known as now a days and actually just means you rely on natural rock and use whatever protection your gear gives you while going up. The sport has also been divided into some sub-styles and will depend on the guy at the bottom as well. There is a grading system and they grade techniques to see how accurate you are or how difficult your climb is.

A map has already been put in place for you when you go climbing. You use your own hands and feet when you start climbing as well as use a bouldering pad and this all combined is called bouldering and the height that you will climb is something like four to five meters. And obviously the higher you go the more chance you will have of encountering danger.

Climbers usually work in couples and use specialized techniques for climbing as well as the essential equipment which aids in safety they will also make use of ropes and anchors which aids the climbers in case of a fall. These anchors and ropes are constructed differently to suit each particular style and then again the roped climbing is divided based on how their belay systems are set up.

Top roping is where beginners will start and you will be given easy bouldering as well and so this is the way you will work your way up. When you have developed some kind of skills and have some confidence in lead climbing your winning. Top roping and lead climbing are two different types of climbing. And of course don’t forget systems whereby you are graded. These also differ from one place to the next in each country.

Outdoor climbing will only take place if the rocks are dry so that climbers can get a good grip some even do night climbing. Do not attempt to climb ever unless you have been through a course or you have professional instructors with you, as it only takes one tiny mistake and that could cause you your life.

Golfing Etiquette Basics

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Golf is a carefully balanced game of rules and etiquette, and it’s quite important to know the basics of golfing etiquette before you go on the course to play your first game of golf.

It doesn’t matter whether you are playing on your own, in a twosome or in a foursome, golfing etiquette demands that you must always wait your turn. You must stay aware of the group on the next hole and wait until they are well ahead of you before hitting your ball.

Golfing etiquette also means that it is never cool to “push” the group in front of you. If you are playing with others, wait your turn to hit the ball and never play at the same time as another player.

While you are waiting for your turn, go to your ball and determine what club you will need to use and how you are going to hit it. This is called “ready golf” and keeps the game moving along. Don’t rush anybody, just be ready.

Another useful piece of golfing etiquette, especially for novices is ‘playing through’. For example, if your team is holding up the players behind you, perhaps because you are playing consistently over par or taking a long time to choose your club, let them play through. You would simply wave them through, or if they are near enough to you, just ask them if they would like to play through. You will never make enemies by doing this!

When someone is taking a shot, you should be standing behind them and you shouldn’t make any noise! It is very distracting to be ready to tee off and just as you pull back, someone decides to jingle coins in their pocket or noisily unwrap a piece of candy.

Replacing your divots. Say you are on the fairway and you hit the ball and a clod of dirt and grass goes flying, golfing etiquette says you should replace it. On some courses you just put the clod back and step on it to press it down, but on most courses, there is a sand/seed mixture on the course to put into the divot. If your ball makes a deep impression when it lands on the green, you can use your divot tool to repair it.

As soon as you have completed a hole, replace the flag and leave the green as quickly as possible so that the next players can play that hole. Add up your score and write it on the scorecard when you get back to your trolley.

For sure, there is much more to golfing etiquette than this, but these basic rules of golfing etiquette will enable you to get around the course without upsetting anyone. If we all uphold golfing etiquette we will keep the game nice and friendly, or not?
