A Brief Education in Cycling

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Unlike soccer, football, baseball, and even track and field, cycling is not necessarily the top attention or cash grabbing sport in the world today. In reality, most of us know very little - if anything - about the sport. The bicycle (the instrument of the cycler) is one of the most familiar items in the world. It, however, is recognized as a leisure and transportation tool. Many of us fail to think of the bicycle as the equipment a cycler uses in a heart-pumping competition. In recent years, figures such as Lance Armstrong have brought some attention to the sport. Nevertheless, it remains largely in the obscurity.

And while cycling isn’t necessarily the most popular or well-known sport in the world, it is not insignificant. The reality is that cycling is really quite exciting to follow and is extremely beneficial to practice.

Cycling was originally created, of course, as a form of getting from one place to another more than anything. While it remains both a transportation and recreational activity, it is becoming increasingly valued as a sport on a competitive level.

The earliest races took place in the 19th century, with large races becoming popular in the 1890s curing the “Golden Age of Cycling” in Europe. In fact, cycling was a quite popular sport until the mid-20th century. Today, cycling is largely known for the Tour de France, which started in 1903. It is featured in the Olympics, giving viewers another chance to experience it. Beyond these two events, however, it is a minority sport.

There are many different types of races and competitions. Events may last for minutes, hours and even days, and competition may be individual or team. Mountain biking has become increasingly popular in recent years (even being included as an Olympic sport), as have road racing and indoor dome competition.

Cycling is not just for the pros. In fact, it is a great option for those looking to begin a fitness program or to change the fitness program they currently use. Popularity of the sport is increasing among even the most amateur athletes.

Research has linked cycling, like most physical activity, to an overall increase in physical and mental health. The time, effort and money put into starting out in the world of cycling will be returned to the individual manifold.

Cycling is primarily a cardiovascular activity, much like running, swimming and rowing. It differs from similar cardio work-outs is in that it is low-impact and therefore much easier on joints and bones than, for example, jogging. Cyclers burn calories and fat during work-outs (though how many calories are burned depends largely upon effort) and is a great cardio alternative for those with arthritis, past sports injuries or problems with obesity.

Those looking to try out cycling for the first time will be happy to know that they have both indoor and outdoor options available to them. Spin classes are available in almost all gyms, and sporting goods stores sell bikes year-round.

If you don’t know much about cycling yet, it may be time to start doing some research. Check your TV Guide to find out when an event will be featured on ESPN or another sports channel, and head to your local bike shop to see what equipment it has to offer. You may be surprised to find out how much you enjoy this lesser-known sport.

Damian Papworth loves cycling, both as a leisure activity and in weekend competition. He knows how important hydration in the sport is so he published the Cycling Water Bottle website. You can visit it at http://cyclingwaterbottleshop.com

Golfing Etiquette Basics

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Golf is a carefully balanced game of rules and etiquette, and it’s quite important to know the basics of golfing etiquette before you go on the course to play your first game of golf.

It doesn’t matter whether you are playing on your own, in a twosome or in a foursome, golfing etiquette demands that you must always wait your turn. You must stay aware of the group on the next hole and wait until they are well ahead of you before hitting your ball.

Golfing etiquette also means that it is never cool to “push” the group in front of you. If you are playing with others, wait your turn to hit the ball and never play at the same time as another player.

While you are waiting for your turn, go to your ball and determine what club you will need to use and how you are going to hit it. This is called “ready golf” and keeps the game moving along. Don’t rush anybody, just be ready.

Another useful piece of golfing etiquette, especially for novices is ‘playing through’. For example, if your team is holding up the players behind you, perhaps because you are playing consistently over par or taking a long time to choose your club, let them play through. You would simply wave them through, or if they are near enough to you, just ask them if they would like to play through. You will never make enemies by doing this!

When someone is taking a shot, you should be standing behind them and you shouldn’t make any noise! It is very distracting to be ready to tee off and just as you pull back, someone decides to jingle coins in their pocket or noisily unwrap a piece of candy.

Replacing your divots. Say you are on the fairway and you hit the ball and a clod of dirt and grass goes flying, golfing etiquette says you should replace it. On some courses you just put the clod back and step on it to press it down, but on most courses, there is a sand/seed mixture on the course to put into the divot. If your ball makes a deep impression when it lands on the green, you can use your divot tool to repair it.

As soon as you have completed a hole, replace the flag and leave the green as quickly as possible so that the next players can play that hole. Add up your score and write it on the scorecard when you get back to your trolley.

For sure, there is much more to golfing etiquette than this, but these basic rules of golfing etiquette will enable you to get around the course without upsetting anyone. If we all uphold golfing etiquette we will keep the game nice and friendly, or not?

Naturally Raise Your Metabolism with Supplements

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

The body is an amazing mechanism, and it’s all natural, too. Usually we don’t realize how much our body has to run around and accomplish so many jobs at once. Too often we do not take the time to value this in our lives and take it for granted.

We may be thinking about our body constantly if our health starts to go downhill. Taking care of yourself and your health on a regular basis is better and simpler than trying to get healthy again once you have actually become sick.

Remaining fit and making sure that you’re not carrying around too much weight is a very important thing to lots of people. With the busy lives many people lead today, it is something hard to achieve. That is not to say that we cannot do it.

One thing you can do is to keep your metabolism up to ensure your body makes the most progress possible. This can either be done by eating the right way, exercising or taking supplements. Any of these will work or you can make a combination.

The consumption of supplements to increase your metabolic rate is comparatively easy. If you want to fire up your metabolic process just try some supplements. They will keep you functioning for the whole day.

The most important is that you select something which is completely natural so you do not damage your body in the process. The use of artificial chemicals to change how your body operates is not a sound idea.

Although there are a lot of different supplements which can increase our metabolism, one of the most recommended is green tea. You can take it either in naturally brewed form, or concentrated tablet form.

Natural components in green tea keep your metabolic process even and serve as antioxidants. Use this product regularly and you’ll get rapid results you’ve always wanted!

6 Easy Tips to Weight Loss Success

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

If you’re hoping to lose fat, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve tried a lot of methods. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people who are unhappy with their bodies don’t succeed in their fat loss goals. That’s because they’re often using gimmicky weight loss plans that can actually damage their bodies! If you’re in this boat, and you don’t know how to get rid of the fat while staying healthy, here are a few tips that might get you on the right track.

1. Consume lots of water. Your body demands a lot of water therefore give it water. Water isn’t just a way to flush toxin out but when you have more water in the body you’ll in general feel fitter and healthier. This itself will deter any inclination to overeat. The best thing about water is it contains no calories at all.

2. Start your day with a glass of water. As soon as you wake up, gulp down a glass of cool water. It’s a wonderful way to start you day and you only need a lesser quantity of your breakfast drink after that. A glass of water lets out all your digestive juices and sort of lubricates the insides of your body. You may have your morning cup of tea but have it after a glass of water. It is good for you.

3. Drink a glass of water before you start the meal. Water naturally needs some space so that you feel fuller without actually having to stuff yourself.

4. Have a glass of water while you eat as well. Take a drink after each bite and you will feel full more quickly so you can leave the table feeling satisfied without feeling bloated. Drinking water while you eat will also help your food to settle more quickly, which also helps you to feel full faster.

5. Do your best to stay away from soda. All sodas are sweetened with lots of sugar. The more you can cut out of your diet the better. Also, diet soda is still soda. It may not have as much sugar, but it has other chemicals and components that are not good for your body either. If you drink a soda, counteract it with a glass of water. Remember, caffeine dehydrates you as well. Decaffeinated sodas still have caffeine in small amounts as well and just as much sugar, so they are not much healthier either.

6. Include in your diet things that contain more water like tomatoes and watermelons. These things contain 90 to 95% water so that there is nothing that you have to lose by feasting on them. They fill you up without adding to the pounds.

Basic Golfing Tips for Beginners: 3

Monday, April 13th, 2009

The term ‘the long game’ refers to your drives (shots off the tee) and fairway shots; that is every shot except the shots you make to actually get onto the green.

Because each hole has a different difficulty level, a different par and different hazards, advising you to use your driver every time on every tee would obviously be wrong.

This is something that you will learn over time as you learn the various shots you need to make according to the club, the placement of the ball and your personal swing.

As a rule of thumb, the lower the number of the club, the longer and lower your ball will travel through the air. For example, a 4-iron will make the ball travel on a long and low trajectory and will most likely roll when it hits the ground, whereas a 9-iron will give the ball much more loft and it will go less distance both in the air and over the ground.

The professionals on TV make it look so easy, don’t they? They hit the ball long and straight time after time after time and never miss-hit the ball causing it trickle six or seven feet or completely miss the ball altogether.

Driving is very important to the game, and many hours spent at the driving range will help improve your distance. Experiment with the same club to see what works for you if you move the ball forward or backward in your stance. Take a lesson, if possible, and learn the proper swing from the beginning.

Mastering the long game will help you get to the green in fewer strokes, keeping your score and frustration levels down. Remember that it takes a long time to learn consistency and also remember that you’re supposed to be having fun!

Kids Soccer, Having Fun Is The Rule

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

Coach determines team - It is just a fact that the type of coach will determine the type of team. Children are young branches capable of being bent and formed. However coaches are already outgrown with their own ideas and techniques. If the coach is unsuccessful the team will also be. The kids in the kids soccer team will follow the old dogs’ tricks as he or she is unable to be taught any new.

Development is fun- Kids join a soccer team to develop their gaming skills as well as to have fun with other like minded critters. In order to develop the game, as much possible time must be spent on the field. Approximately 50% time must be spend on the field by each player to get full exposure to all facets of the game. Rotation of players should be done regularly based on player passion instead of player ability and attitude.

Cost exercise- Kids soccer can be a very costly exercise, especially when professional trainers are considered. In general these highly trained soccer enthusiasts come at a price, a high price. Both emotionally and financially. In terms of emotion these trainers have a tendency to take away the fun and make children bad losers. Enforcing the attitude of either you win the game or you are a loser at life. In terms of finances the parents will need to rob a bank to pay up to extra US$100. Please note that I am not saying professional trainers are not a good thing, they are just not age and league appropriate.

Is it the right game?- A child is soccer ready from the age of 5 years. It is an unisex game, suitable for both boys and girls. The sport is also relatively safe as contact is limited. Unfortunately soccer is not for everyone as certain traits are required from the player including good vision, be team player, top aerobic fitness and top ball skills.

Discipline- Success and discipline go hand in hand. The one is not possible without the other. The greater the mutual discipline and respect the more enjoyable the game will be on and off the field. Coaches that are new to the game have the greatest challenge to enforce and develop discipline with their game.

Camping- Kids camps are ideal for development and socialisation with children with the same ideas and love of the game. However exercise caution in choosing your childs’ camp. Safety is essential as well as separate of children of different ages. Mixed camps are generally a disaster as there is no age appropriate programmes applied. Safety is also not of the highest importance during these mixed camps. Different ages require different supervision.

Basics- To understand the game you first have to understand the rules. There are 11 players in a team including the goalkeeper. No handling of the ball with hands or arms is allowed. A goal is scored when the ball is kicked into the opposing teams net. One goal represents one point. A soccer field is rectangular and measures between 90-120×45-90 metres.

Sideline coaching- As a parent please avoid sideline coaching. This only confuses the kids. The coach has a set game plan and strategy which you are not informed of. Respect is very important between coach and players as well as coach and parents. If the parents bulldoze the coach, it will give the children the idea that they can do as they please and need not listen to the coach.

Read These 3 Tips Before You Walk to Lose Weight

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

If you thought losing weight was difficult, maintaining that ‘lost’ weight is even more difficult. I cannot tell you how many of my friends were able to lose weight successfully, only to regain back all the ‘lost’ pounds after a few weeks.

Break that cycle and grab a hold of the rope of discipline. Stay away form junk food and keep on your workout program. That’s right. The weight fluctuation is our fault.

It’s critical for you to stay on your diet and exercise routine even after you have reached your desired weight. However, many folks don’t. Guess what? The weight is back in town.

I don’t say that you must go to the gym. Some walking will do just fine. Here are 3 tips to get you started.

1. Consult with your doctor: Before we start walking for losing weight on a regular basis, I would recommend you visit your doctor and have a word with him.

He will monitor your schedule based on your health conditions. Therefore, it’s best to have a clean check up. Who knows, you may have a problem with your feet. Your doctor can recommend bike riding instead.

2. Track your steps: Walking for weight loss requires you to know exactly how much it takes (i.e. how many steps a day). It’s impossible to know if you walk one mile today and a half tomorrow. The best way to find out is to purchase a pedometer.

They are not very expensive and you can find one at most local stores. Pedometers will help us count our steps. This way we know how many steps are needed everyday to lose fat effectively.

Just stick to your “losing weight by walking” plan and you’ll feel much better!

3. Put on the right clothes: walking to lose weight would be pretty uncomfortable without proper clothing. Loose-fitting clothes will allow air to move through easily. Avoid tight and heavy clothes.

Shoes, we all have shoes. However, flip-flops are not athlete shoes. Wearing comfortable well-fitting athlete shoes will allow you to enjoy walking without hurting yourself.
